Three days in New York

 

We stole away to NYC for a few days last week, primarily to see a play written by Jim's cousin, Cate Ryan, performed by the Negro Ensemble Company. On the ride into the city we came across a movie production, or another episode of "Law and Order"??, being shot on a midtown street. The actors waited for their cue across the street, below.

After checking in at our hotel on Times Square we set out for a late afternoon walking tour. We came across Midtown West School PS 212's whimsical Children's Garden on West 48th Street, above.

Then to Rockefeller Center at dusk, above and below. We crossed Fifth Avenue from there and ducked into St. Patrick's Cathedral for a visit.

On to Grand Central Terminal where, following an obligatory stop at the Oyster Bar, we peered over the shoulders of commuters to catch glimpses of competition in the 15th annual J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions squash tournament being played inside Grand Central, above.

Thursday morning began with a walk on The High Line, above, followed by a visit to the Steven Kasher Gallery on West 23rd Street to see the current exhibition of black and white photographs by Weegee and Vivian Maier.

On Union Square we came across an artist in the process of creating a temporary work inspired by Damien Hirst's "spot" abstractions, currently being exhibited at Gagosian Galleries worldwide, above and below.
 

We took the subway whenever we could--and listened to music of every description--part of the wonderful "Music Under New York" program.
Bryant Park, behind the Public Library on Fifth Avenue, is a favorite spot and one we returned to a couple of times during our short visit, above, and in the next couple of photos.

Both "citi Pond" packed with skaters, above, and Le Carrousel in Bryant Park, below, attract New Yorkers of all ages.

We wanted to stay on Times Square for the experience, and found a hotel through Hotwire that was extremely reasonable and amazingly quiet. FYI: New York hotels are on sale in January.

The fashion du jour for New York women much younger than I is a short jacket with a very short skirt or shorts, and black opaque tights and black boots. Alas, those days are long gone for me. Instead, I wore one for the home team--- my favorite Borough Vintage coat, left!

Whenever Jim and I finally get away, we wonder why we don't travel more often. Even a few days can make a huge difference. Hope a little travel is in your future too!

I also happened to be in New York City last week and your photos capture many of the same sights, sounds and smells of the city that I experienced. Surprised we didn't bump into each other! I came home invigorated and ready to put my energy to work in my studio space in the Pierce Arrow building as I prepare for an upcoming exhibit. It's my slice of NYC in STL since the creative vibe of the building and people who work there make me feel like I'm in a Soho loft space.

Your pictures make me miss NYC so much! One of my best friends lives just across the river in NJ and I try to visit her as often as I can. We were supposed to visit The High Line the last time I was in town, but ran out of time. I love your captions and the way you describe the details of your visit.
