Jay Reiter calls himself "the urban guerilla gardener," though he did have permission from a very generous (and, in my opinion very smart) neighboring property owner, Sherman Katz, who allowed Jay to plant a garden beside a garage just west of Taylor between Lindell and Maryland.
Jay was looking for a place to create a garden after he couldn't find an appropriate spot on the property of his condo building, The Lindell Terrace. Mr Katz, who owns the apartment building to the west, offered the use of a small parcel just off the alley.
The determined gardener salvaged bricks from a renovation project at the Lindell Terrace and used them to lay a path. Then he created a charming little gem of a garden that is meticulously maintained, with a bit of humor thrown in too.
There are dahlias and impatiens growing against the garage wall; zinnias, phlox, and purple coneflower are planted on the east side of the narrow space.
Jay can enjoy a view of his creation from his balcony and bedroom window next door. It's a win-win situation for both the avid gardener and the building owner, the generous Mr. Katz.
what a great collaboration! o, I love zinnias!
