When I walk by this unsightly property at the corner of Euclid and West Pine, I wonder how the developer can justify leaving it in this shocking condition. We all know that financing for real estate development is extremely difficult these days, but that's no excuse for the deplorable state of this prominent corner.
This is the site of Mills' Properties proposed "City Walk on Euclid." Their website shows a picture of the finished building with 2010 beneath it. Meanwhile, for reasons unknown, there are two large "no parking" signs affixed to the chain link fence. But that's the least of it.
Shouldn't the developer at least be required to drain the "lake" instead of leaving it as a breeding ground for mosquitoes? And while we wait for the development to occur, couldn't the eyesore be hidden behind a plywood fence, which could then be used creatively, perhaps for a public art project. Anything but this!
I left a message for the project manager and will let you know when and if I hear back. I also tried to get in touch with Alderman Joe Roddy's neighborhood office (this property is in the 17th Ward) to see what they could tell me about it, but that call hasn't been returned either.
Excellent post, Nicki. My family moved here in August 2008, and the lake has been a permanent fixture since then. I completely agree that financing is difficult to come by, but any developer has an obligation to the area and to the health of the nearby residents. Let's hope something is done about it soon.

You go, Nicki! And when you're through with this, can you do something about Ballpark Village? Thanks!

We joked to some out-of-town visitors who were staying at the Indigo that that was their pool! You'd think the Indigo hotel alone would be up-in-arms about it! It really is a disaster.

We were just commenting about the lovely cattail plants growing at Scum Lake. It looks like a health hazard and the hole needs to be filled if there is no immediate schedule for construction or we could end up looking at this thing for years. Putting a plywood fence around it is not the right solution.
