You know the day is going to be a good one when you begin the morning with a malted waffle, $6.95, from Crepes: etc.--and for heaven's sake, say yes to the whipped cream! It was a beautiful day when we walked over for breakfast recently, and sitting at a table on Maryland Plaza watching the neighborhood come to life added even more to its appeal.
While you are waiting for the waffle iron to heat up, scan the weather report, latest sports info, and local events posted on the chalkboard behind the counter.
Eric Kelly, the chef of both Scape (which is next door) and Crepes: etc. has a "mini market" in the front windows. There you will find everything from the two-volume set of Julia Child's cookbooks, $91, Thomas Keller's (of French Laundry and Per Se fame) Bouchon, $35, to 16-ounce bags of bread flour & crepe batter mix, $2 each.
Crepes: etc. opens at 7 (8 on Sunday) for breakfast & lunch seven days a week. It closes at 3, except on Friday and Saturday, so Chef Eric can take over the shared kitchen for Scape. Crepes: etc. is open late on the weekends offering a limited menu of crepes and waffles...perfect after a night out in the neighborhood.
Crepes: etc., 52 Maryland Plaza, Mon. to Thurs., 7-3, Fri. 7-12, Sat. 8-12, Sun. 8-5, (314) 367-2200.
